Peter Obi Fires Back At Datti, Says Anambra Record Proves Capacity To Transform Nigeria
By Tams Jonah, ABUJA –Â Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has responded to recent criticisms from his former political ally, Datti Baba-Ahmed, insisting that his record as governor of Anambra State speaks for itself.
Datti had questioned Obi’s capacity to significantly improve Nigeria if elected president, prompting the former Anambra governor to point to his administration’s achievements as evidence of his ability to deliver measurable development.
Speaking during an interview with journalist Ojinika Okpe, Obi said his performance in Anambra demonstrated that he was capable of implementing reforms and delivering results when given the opportunity to lead.
He highlighted developments recorded during his tenure in areas including education, healthcare, infrastructure and financial management, arguing that the progress achieved at the state level could be replicated on a national scale.
According to Obi, the question should not be whether he can transform Nigeria, but whether the country is prepared to embrace the same approach to governance that he applied in Anambra.
The former governor maintained that his record provides a practical basis for assessing his leadership capacity, rather than relying on political rhetoric or speculation about what he would achieve in office.
Obi’s response comes amid renewed political exchanges among opposition figures as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The disagreement with Datti is particularly notable because the duo contested the 2023 presidential election together under the Labour Party, with Obi as the presidential candidate and Baba-Ahmed as his running mate.
Their latest exchange has therefore added another layer to the growing political realignments and disagreements within Nigeria’s opposition camp.
