Opening Prayer:

Lord, I pray that you lead me into your truth as I meditate on your word in Jesus name.

Today Scripture: 1 Corinthians 7:1-16.

Question(s) for Reflection

• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?

• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Corinth was a seaport and as with seaports today, there were many sex workers. In addition, there were religious women from the temple of the goddess of love, Aphrodite, who came to the city in the evenings offering “free sex.” For new converts in Corinth, going back into an immoral life was a real danger.

Hence, Paul encourages the unmarried who finds it difficult to exercise self-control to marry instead of burning with passion (vs.8-9). For those married, they should not starve each other sexually, so the partner is not tempted to seek satisfaction outside the home. The couple must not leave room for the devil. Sexual immorality should be shunned by all, married or single (6:18).

The idea of marriage originated from God himself not man (Genesis 2:21-24, Matthew 19:4-6), and marriage is a lifetime commitment. What is God’s command about divorce (v.11; cf. Malachi 2:16, Matthew 19:9)?

We should not take Paul’s message in vs.12-16 out of its context. Many were already married before they came to Christ. See Paul’s charge for the Christian who is single in 2 Corinthians 6:14-16.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer: As a single, pray for your future wife/ husband (Proverbs 19:14). And if married, pray that you will understand your spouse and do all things in agreement.
