Senate Orders Probe into Ujevwu–Itakpe Train Derailments, Moves for Itakpe–Abuja Extension
The Nigerian Senate has adopted a motion by Senator Ede Dafinone calling for an urgent investigation into recurring derailments on the Ujevwu–Itakpe Train Line, full rehabilitation, and an extension of the rail line to Abuja.
On the floor of the Senate, Senator Ede Dafinone drew national attention to the recurring derailments and suspension of services along the Ujevwu–Itakpe Train Line, calling for an urgent investigation, full rehabilitation, and stronger safety measures to protect passengers and safeguard this vital national infrastructure.
The Ujevwu–Itakpe corridor, which links the South-South through Delta State to the North-Central region, is crucial for the movement of passengers, goods, and industrial materials. Senator Dafinone emphasized that repeated derailments have not only endangered lives but also disrupted economic activities and eroded public confidence in Nigeria’s rail transport system.
He further urged the Federal Government to extend the rail line from Itakpe to Abuja to ensure full national connectivity, reduce hardship for commuters, and expand the operational fleet to meet the growing passenger and cargo demand.
After deliberations, the Senate adopted all resolutions, mandating:
- Immediate repairs of vandalized rail tracks along the corridor;
- A comprehensive investigation into the recurring derailments and broader challenges facing Nigeria’s rail infrastructure;
- Strengthened maintenance and safety protocols by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC); and
- The Itakpe–Abuja extension project to be prioritized for national development.
Senator Dafinone noted that the motion reflects the Senate’s commitment to a safer, modern, and efficient rail system that drives industrial growth and economic transformation.
He reaffirmed that a well-functioning rail network will not only connect regions more effectively but also boost trade, create jobs, and enhance Nigeria’s overall transportation framework.
