Dickson, Peter Obi Take Part in Ijaw Traditional Boat Regatta in Bayelsa
By Jonah Fubara, YENAGOA – Former Bayelsa State Governor and Senator representing Bayelsa West, Henry Seriake Dickson, and the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, have participated in a traditional boat regatta at Toru-Orua, Dickson’s hometown in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The event featured traditional warriors and war boats in a colourful display of Ijaw cultural heritage, with the two political leaders joining the procession on the waterways.
The regatta showcased the maritime traditions of the Ijaw people, symbolising courage, unity, resilience and ancestral pride.
The participation of Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, offered him an opportunity to experience aspects of the cultural identity and historical heritage of the Ijaw nation.
For the Ijaw people, the boat represents more than a means of transportation. It reflects their longstanding relationship with the waterways, which have shaped their history, livelihoods, struggles and social identity.
The event also added a cultural dimension to Dickson’s homecoming, combining political engagement with a celebration of the traditions and identity of his people.
The gathering was described as an expression of friendship, mutual respect and recognition of the Ijaw people’s contribution to Nigeria’s cultural diversity.
Through the traditional war boats and participation of community warriors, the regatta brought to life a significant aspect of Ijaw history and reinforced the importance of preserving indigenous traditions.
At Toru-Orua, the celebration served as a reminder of the enduring connection between the Ijaw people and their waterways, as well as the role of cultural heritage in sustaining collective identity across generations.
