Super Eagles Impress Despite Narrow Defeat to Portugal in World Cup Warm-Up
LISBON, PORTUGAL — Nigeria’s Super Eagles delivered a spirited performance but fell narrowly 2-1 to Portugal in an international friendly on Wednesday night, offering encouraging signs ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The three-time African champions responded strongly after an early setback and matched the European giants for long spells before a late strike from Francisco Conceição sealed victory for the hosts.
Portugal took the lead through Pedro Neto, who capitalised on an attacking move to put his side ahead in the opening stages of the contest. However, the Super Eagles refused to be rattled and gradually settled into the game.
Nigeria’s persistence paid off before halftime when forward Akor Adams powered home an equaliser, rewarding the visitors for their growing influence and ensuring the sides went into the break level.
Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye emerged as one of Nigeria’s standout performers, producing a series of crucial saves to deny veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo and João Félix. His heroics between the posts helped keep Portugal at bay as the Super Eagles displayed defensive discipline and resilience.
Head coach Érik Chelle watched on approvingly as his side maintained their structure against a Portuguese team packed with attacking talent. Nigeria’s midfield and defence battled fiercely throughout the encounter, with Bruno Onyemaechi notably holding his own in several challenges against Ronaldo, while Tochukwu Nadi and Onyinye Ndidi worked tirelessly to disrupt Portugal’s rhythm.
The breakthrough eventually came in the 74th minute when substitute Francisco Conceição curled a fine effort beyond Okoye to restore Portugal’s advantage.
Despite the defeat, the Super Eagles left the pitch with plenty of positives. The team demonstrated organisation, determination and attacking threat against one of Europe’s strongest sides, underlining the progress being made under Chelle’s leadership.
Akor Adams’ goal, Okoye’s impressive goalkeeping display and the team’s overall competitiveness against a world-class opponent will provide encouragement as Nigeria continues preparations for the FIFA World Cup.
The match also featured a number of memorable moments, including Ronaldo’s visible frustration at being denied by the Nigerian defence and goalkeeper, as well as a spirited celebration from Adams after his equalising strike.
While Portugal secured the victory, Nigeria’s performance suggested that the Super Eagles are steadily building momentum and confidence ahead of football’s biggest tournament.
