Tinubu Calls for Unity, Fairness as APC Primaries Begin Nationwide
Abuja – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the ruling All Progressives Congress to embrace unity, fairness, and sportsmanship as the party commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued from the State House on Thursday, President Tinubu described the commencement of the primaries as a historic milestone for the APC, noting that the party was preparing for its fourth election cycle since its formation.
He said the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, personal sacrifice, and selflessness, stressing that such ideals had sustained the party through previous electoral contests.
According to the President, the primaries, beginning with the House of Representatives contests and ending with the presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026, are not just exercises to elect candidates but a test of the party’s unity and resilience.
President Tinubu commended ongoing efforts by party leaders to adopt consensus arrangements where possible, in line with the Electoral Act and the APC constitution, saying such moves would reduce rancour and strengthen internal cohesion.
He, however, urged aspirants and delegates to maintain peace where consensus fails and elections become necessary.
The President warned against divisive politics and called on winners to avoid triumphalism while encouraging unsuccessful aspirants to accept outcomes in good faith and seek redress through established party mechanisms where necessary.
“Our opponents are waiting for us to be against each other; we should disappoint them,” he stated.
Tinubu also charged governors, party executives, and leaders at all levels to ensure a transparent and level playing field for all contestants, emphasizing that fairness in the process would give confidence even to those who may not emerge victorious.
Highlighting the importance of inclusion, the President appealed to party members to give greater opportunities to women and youths during the primaries, describing them as critical demographics in national development.
He further directed the Police and other security agencies to remain professional and limit their roles strictly to maintaining peace and order throughout the exercise.
President Tinubu expressed optimism that the exercise would strengthen the APC ahead of the general elections and wished all aspirants success in the contests.
