Uzor Arukwe Opens Up on the Challenge of Playing Twin Brothers in One Gidi Night
By Dim Oba, LAGOS –Â Nollywood actor Uzor Arukwe has shared the demanding yet rewarding experience of portraying twin brothers in the forthcoming crime thriller One Gidi Night, revealing that the dual role pushed him to explore new depths of his acting ability.
Ahead of the film’s nationwide cinema release on September 11, Arukwe introduced audiences to Engees and Easy, two identical twins with vastly different personalities whose lives unfold in dramatically contrasting ways.
According to the actor, the opportunity came through director James Abinibi, whose script challenged him to stretch beyond his comfort zone.
“Every once in a while, you meet a script and a director that looks at you and says, ‘Show me what you can really do,'” Arukwe said, describing the project as one of the most demanding of his career.
He explained that while both characters share the same face, they are completely different men. Easy is a blind chemist who experiences the world without sight, requiring the actor to rethink his reliance on facial expressions and eye contact. Instead, Arukwe said he had to focus on listening, movement and understanding the character’s perspective without reducing his blindness to a mere performance.
In contrast, Engees is portrayed as a ruthless villain with his own motivations and moral complexities. Arukwe noted that portraying the two men convincingly meant creating distinct rhythms, instincts and personalities while ensuring audiences forgot they were watching the same actor.
Reflecting on the experience, the award-winning actor described the double role as one that truly tested his range, saying he “reached deep” to bring both brothers to life.
The actor has now invited movie lovers to decide for themselves whether he successfully transformed into two completely different characters when One Gidi Night premieres in cinemas on September 11.
The highly anticipated film is expected to showcase Arukwe’s versatility as he takes on one of the most challenging performances of his Nollywood career.
