The poll attracted about 4,700 respondents responding to the question ‘Will you ‘Japa’ from Nigeria? with the following five responses – 1) See you. Me that I have already left, 2) Of course. Any reasonable person should do so, 3) Nah. I can’t live anywhere but Nigeria, 4) I did. And I regret it, to be honest, 5) What does ‘japa’ mean?

After two days, 24% says See you. Me that I have already left while 52% says Of Course. Any reasonable person should do so.  These two responses shows that Nigerians are not interested in staying in Nigerian especially with the current economic hardship.

For responses 3 that reads Nah. I can’t live anywhere but Nigeria had 12% of the 4,700 respondents.  It simply means that fewer Nigerians are willing to stay and grow the country despite the harsh realities.

Only 2% of the respondents regret leaving Nigeria.  This is a sad commentary for a nation blessed in human and natural resources that majority of its citizens are happy outside than insider.

Ironically, despite the trend, japa, only 10% of the 4,700 approximately 470 respondents don’t know the meaning of the term.

Japa, a slang that describe the movement of Nigerians from Nigeria to Europe and other western countries for greener pastures.  The migration trend is causing brain drain and negatively impacting on the economy of Nigeria.
