Bayelsa’s Newly Acquired Aircraft Makes Historic First Landing
Bayelsa State on Wednesday marked a major milestone in its aviation history as one of the two newly acquired state-owned aircraft completed its inaugural flight and landed at the Bayelsa International Airport, greeted by jubilant residents and dignitaries.
The ATR-72/600 aircraft departed the domestic wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 09:30hrs with about 50 passengers on board, including Governor Douye Diri, former Deputy Governor Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd), members of the state’s National Assembly Caucus, Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil) Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, NDDC Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, INC President Prof. Ben Okaba, and PANDEF National Chairman Dr. Boladei Igali.
The aircraft touched down in Bayelsa at 10:40hrs to a joyous welcome and a ceremonial water cannon salute.
Speaking after the landing, Governor Diri described the moment as “historic,” noting that the successful flight underscores his administration’s commitment to guaranteeing air connectivity and expanding economic opportunities for the state.
“Six years ago, we promised the people of Bayelsa a future of air connectivity and opportunity. Today, that promise takes wing,” Diri said. “This achievement marks the beginning of a new era of regular and reliable air services that will boost commerce, open new markets, and empower our people.”
The governor announced that although the aircraft is currently registered under “Pioneer Airline,” he has directed an immediate name change to Air Bayelsa or Bayelsa Air to reflect its true ownership by the state.
Diri also paid tribute to former governors—late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who first envisioned an airport at the current site, and Senator Seriake Dickson, who completed the airport project—describing their contributions as foundational to the state’s aviation journey. He further appreciated Premium Trust Bank, Pioneer Airline, and the Bayelsa State House of Assembly for their support.
Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, AVM Nelson Calmday (rtd), said the airline will operate daily flights to Lagos and Abuja, with plans to expand services to other Niger Delta states.
Pioneer Airline MD, Captain Henry Ungbuku, expressed gratitude to the governor for the trust reposed in the company and pledged efficient management of the aircraft.
Premium Trust Bank CEO, Mr. Emmanuel Emefienim, noted that the acquisition of the aircraft reflects the state government’s foresight and the strength of its partnership with the bank.
Also speaking, Senator Konbowei Benson, on behalf of the National Assembly Caucus, commended Governor Diri’s vision and assured continuous legislative support.
Minister Lokpobiri lauded the initiative and urged the state to maintain prudent management by ensuring officials pay for flights.
NDDC MD Dr. Ogbuku welcomed the development, promising collaboration to maximize the aircraft’s benefits, while PANDEF’s Dr. Igali praised the governor’s strides and assured ongoing regional support.
