Urban Renewal: Bayelsa Government Redesigns Yenagoa Internal Roads For Rehabilitation
The Bayelsa State Government has announced an ongoing comprehensive redesign and rehabilitation of failed internal roads in Yenagoa as part of its broader urban renewal strategy.
Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo disclosed this when the leadership of the Epie Kingdom Development Organization (EKDO) paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Yenagoa. He assured residents that the government is committed to fixing all deteriorated roads to improve mobility and enhance the aesthetics of the state capital.
A statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Doubara Atasi, noted that the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure has already commenced rehabilitation on key internal routes, including Saptex Road, Okaka Road, and several failed portions of the Mbiama–Yenagoa Road.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo emphasized that the government is implementing a full engineering redesign to permanently address drainage failures and recurring flooding in Yenagoa.
He urged the Epie Kingdom Development Organization to expand its focus beyond organising the annual Epie Festival by actively engaging in governance and supporting development efforts in the Epie Kingdom and the entire state.
The Deputy Governor also appealed to the organization, which represents all 17 communities of the Epie Kingdom, to partner with government and security agencies to expose criminal activities and help sustain the prevailing peace in Bayelsa State.
“Some of the roads require full redesign because their filling is too low,” he said. “The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure is already working on a comprehensive redesign. Although resources are limited, we are committed to fixing all bad internal roads in our state capital.”
In his remarks, EKDO President Dr. Wisdom Albert called for government support to acquire 50 plots of land across the Epie Creek for the construction of a befitting palace for the Obenibe and a central events ground for the Epie Annual Festival, which rotates among the 17 communities.
He further appealed for more employment opportunities and political appointments for Epie indigenes and urged the government to address the poor condition of internal roads in Yenagoa.
