Duke: INEC Must Convince Nigerians of Free, Fair Elections
By Tams Jonah, ABUJA – The presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in the 2027 general elections, Donald Duke, says the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has the responsibility of convincing Nigerians that the next election will be free and fair.
Duke made the statement while expressing concern over what he described as widespread distrust of the electoral umpire among Nigerians.
“The onus is on them (INEC) actually to convince Nigerians that there will be free and fair elections. Nigerians have become very cynical and skeptical of INEC, and I’m one of them,” he said.
The former Cross River State governor has previously criticised Nigeria’s electoral system, calling for greater use of technology to ensure that votes are counted and independently verified.
Duke, who was affirmed as the PRP’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election in June, has also advocated reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in the electoral process.
INEC, on its part, says its mission is to conduct free, fair and credible elections and identifies transparency, autonomy and integrity among its core values.
