Electoral Statistics of 2023 Bayelsa Governorship Elections

Bayelsa State is preparing for its governorship elections for Saturday November 11, 2023 with over 1,056,862 registered voters.

The statistics of the voters’ register as published by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC shows that 1,017,613 representing 96% of registered voters had collected their Permanent Voters Cards, PVCs leaving out 39,249 voters representing 4%.

INEC’s statistics reveals that there are 490,767 registered female voters representing 49.1% and 566,095 are male registered voters representing 50.9% of the voters’register in Bayelsa State.

Age distribution of registered voters shows that the Youth population ages (18- 34) leading with 42% of registered voters – 439,272. The Middle Age (35-49) voters come second with 424,370 representing 40%. The Elderly voters between the ages of 50 and 69 comes a distanced third with 15% having 159,940 and the Old (70 and above) have 33,279 voters representing 3%.

The INEC statistics shows that Yenagoa local government area has the highest number of collected PVCs with 201,490 voters.

Other LGAs are Southern Ijaw – 182,659; Sagbama – 182,659; Ekeremor – 128,683; Ogbia – 118,940; Nembe – 97,328; Brass – 91,502 and Kolokuma/Opokuma having 62,144.

INEC says 16 political parties fielded candidates for the 2023 Bayelsa State Governorship Elections.

Bayelsa State has a population of about 1.8m people with 75% riverine area. It is one of deltaic states in the South south political zone of Nigeria.

Recalled that in 2011, the Supreme Court removed the then governor, Timipre Sylva through its judgement with the subsequent swearing in of Seriake Dickson on February 14, 2012.
