Lekki Elegushi Market Fire Destroys 48 Shops
The Lekki Elegushi Market Fire Destroys 48 Shops after an early morning blaze gutted parts of the Elegushi Model Market complex in Lekki, Lagos, leaving traders counting losses.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) receiving a distress call around 2 a.m. Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that firefighters arrived to find the market already engulfed in flames.
Emergency responders swiftly contained the fire, preventing it from spreading further. Preliminary investigations revealed that the inferno started from a makeshift stall before rapidly extending to the market’s main building.
A post-incident assessment showed that no fewer than 48 shops were destroyed in the fire. Thankfully, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.
Following the incident, traders were sensitised on fire prevention practices, while market union leaders were advised to install fire extinguishers at strategic points. Shop owners were also urged to observe strict safety measures, as market fires remain a recurring challenge in Lagos due to unsafe practices.
