Miracle on Everest: Mountaineer Survives Death Zone Ordeal After Family Began Mourning
Kathmandu, Nepal — In an extraordinary tale of endurance, faith, and survival against impossible odds, 57-year-old Nepali mountaineer Dawa Sherpa has been rescued after spending nearly a week stranded near Mount Everest’s notorious “death zone,” where oxygen levels are dangerously low and survival is measured in hours rather than days.
Dawa Sherpa, an experienced climber, was reported missing after his oxygen supply ran out on May 30 during a descent from the world’s highest peak. Exhausted and unable to keep pace with other climbers, he became isolated in one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth.
Facing sub-zero temperatures, fierce winds, and severe oxygen deprivation, Sherpa survived with virtually no food or water. Recounting his ordeal after being rescued, he revealed that he spent the first two days without eating anything.
“I didn’t think I would be alive. I didn’t eat anything for the first two days. Then I began chewing ice,” Sherpa said.
As the days passed and hope faded, his family and community back home believed the worst had happened. Traditional mourning prayers had already commenced, with relatives preparing to accept what seemed to be an inevitable tragedy.
However, fate had other plans.
On June 4, members of a waste-collection team operating on the mountain made a startling discovery. They found Sherpa weak, dehydrated, and slowly crawling toward base camp in a desperate bid for survival.
Rescuers immediately provided emergency assistance before evacuating him to safety, where he began receiving medical treatment and recovery support.
The “death zone,” located above 8,000 metres (26,247 feet), is infamous for its thin air and extreme conditions. Most climbers spend as little time there as possible due to the high risk of altitude sickness, exhaustion, and death.
Sherpa’s survival has stunned mountaineering experts and inspired admiration across Nepal and the global climbing community. Many are describing his rescue as nothing short of miraculous.
As he continues his recovery, Dawa Sherpa’s story stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the determination to keep moving forward even when all hope appears lost.
For a man who believed his final moments had arrived on the slopes of Everest, the mountain has delivered an unforgettable reminder that survival can sometimes emerge from the most impossible circumstances.
