Pope Leo XIV Presides Over Historic Mass, Inaugurates Sagrada Familia’s Tower of Jesus
Barcelona, Spain – Thousands of faithful, pilgrims, dignitaries and visitors gathered in Barcelona on Wednesday as Pope Leo XIV presided over a solemn Holy Mass at the iconic Basilica of the Sagrada FamÃlia and inaugurated the newly completed Tower of Jesus Christ, marking a historic milestone in the Church and architectural history.
The event formed one of the highlights of the Holy Father’s Apostolic Journey to Spain and coincided with the centenary of the death of renowned Catalan architect, Antoni GaudÃ, whose vision has shaped the world-famous basilica for more than a century.
Celebrating the Eucharist inside the magnificent temple, Pope Leo XIV described the Sagrada FamÃlia as a profound expression of faith and a symbol of the Christian journey. The Pontiff urged believers to place Christ at the centre of their lives, emphasizing that the Church’s mission remains rooted in the Gospel and service to humanity.
The inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ followed immediately after the Mass. The towering structure, reaching 172.5 metres, now stands as the tallest and most symbolic of the basilica’s eighteen planned towers, making the Sagrada FamÃlia the tallest church in the world. The completion of the tower represents a decisive step toward fulfilling GaudÃ’s original vision for the basilica, whose construction began in 1882.
During the ceremony, Pope Leo XIV solemnly blessed the tower, describing it as a visible sign of Christ’s presence and lordship over history. The occasion was accompanied by celebrations that recognized the dedication of generations of architects, artisans, engineers and workers who have contributed to the project over the past 144 years.
The Basilica, often regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of sacred architecture, drew Spanish royalty, Church leaders and civic officials to the historic event. Pope Leo praised the temple as a “masterpiece of stone, colour and light” that continues to inspire faith across generations.
The inauguration of the Tower of Jesus Christ carries deep spiritual, artistic and ecclesial significance. Crowned by a monumental cross, the tower symbolizes the centrality of Christ in the life of the Church and serves as a beacon of hope for believers around the world.
As evening fell over Barcelona, celebrations culminated with a special illumination of the tower and the city’s skyline, creating a visual tribute to GaudÃ’s enduring legacy and the faith that inspired his life’s work.
The historic ceremony stands as one of the defining moments of Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Journey to Spain and marks a new chapter in the story of the Sagrada FamÃlia, a monument that continues to unite faith, art and culture in the heart of Barcelona.
