NAFDAC Threatens Fresh Crackdown On Sachet, Small PET Alcoholic Drinks
By Tams Jonah, ABUJA – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has threatened fresh regulatory action against manufacturers still producing or allowing sachet and sub-200ml PET alcoholic beverages to circulate in Nigeria.
The agency warned that companies found violating the restriction would face sanctions, including continued closure of their production facilities.
NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this while speaking to journalists, stressing that the agency would not relent in enforcing the ban on the manufacture and circulation of the affected alcoholic products.
According to Adeyeye, manufacturers that disregard the regulatory directive should be prepared to face the consequences of non-compliance.
She said NAFDAC would continue to deploy its regulatory powers to ensure that the prohibited alcoholic beverages are removed from circulation and that manufacturers comply with the approved standards.
The warning comes amid renewed regulatory attention on the availability of sachet and small-volume alcoholic drinks, particularly concerns over their accessibility and potential impact on public health.
Adeyeye maintained that compliance with NAFDAC regulations was not optional, warning manufacturers against testing the resolve of the agency.
She said facilities that continue to violate the directive could remain shut, alongside other regulatory measures available to the agency.
NAFDAC urged manufacturers and other stakeholders in the alcoholic beverage sector to comply with its directives to avoid sanctions.
The agency reiterated that its enforcement actions were aimed at protecting public health and ensuring that products circulating in the Nigerian market meet established safety and regulatory requirements.
