Play by Rules Guiding The Electoral Process, NUJ Charges INEC, Political Parties

The Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Bayelsa State Council has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, and the sixteen political parties contesting the November 11th, 2023 Gubernatorial Election in Bayelsa State to play according to the rules guiding the electoral system in order to stem the tide of violence during the election.

This is contained in a communique issued at the end of Congress signed by the Council Chairman, Comrade Samuel Numonengi, his Secretary, Comrade Ogio Ipigansi and executive members of the Communique Drafting Committee.

They also called on residents of the state and all political actors to ensure that journalists covering the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state are not harassed or man-handled as it is the duty of journalists to cover election and report objectively whatever that transpired at various polling units adding that the NUJ will not take lightly any attack on journalists by individuals or groups.

While condemning the ongoing vandalism and looting of equipments and other valuables including the TV mast at the former premises of the Niger Delta Television, NDTV at Congress called on communities to protect public properties within their domain.

The NUJ leadership urged politicians and political parties in the state to act peacefully and avoid campaigns of calumny but issues based.

The Congress also urged all and sundry to adequately work with the conventional media outfits inorder to avoid unethical reports commonly associated with some of the social media reports which most times cause embarrassments and damages to individuals and organizations and as a result the conventional media becomes the place to run to inorder to refute such publications.

The NUJ Bayelsa lauded Governor Douye Diri’s led administration for the building of the Ernest Ikoli Media Complex for the state owned media outfits. It however urges the government to ensure that durable furniture are provided for the three media outfits and state of the art equipment for the Newspaper Corporation as it is done for the radio and television stations.

Congress also lauded the government for the construction and rehabilitation of roads across the state, particularly the Yenagoa metropolis and urged the government to do more as some of the roads in the state capital are still in bad conditions.
