In this exclusive interview with our Managing Editor, VICTOR OROYI, Yenagoa-based fast rising movie director and producer, Patrick Marcus Dauduokumor, popularly known as PMD Axedit says I Don’t Have Too Much Challenge in My Personal Production. Excerpts

How did you venture into filmmaking?

I venture into filmmaking when a friend introduce me to a film production. I have always wanted to act, so when I had that opportunity, I felt good one; I didn’t play with it, so I acted in the production.

At what point did convince yourself that you will be a filmmaker?

I made up my mind that I will be a filmmaker after seeing the film title My Love by Ramsey Noah in 2001. Funny, I use to hawk films to make a living. This also gave me the opportunity to watch the for free.

But when I became very serious and that this is where I belong, was when I was arrested for making film. It was my first time, and I am being arrested was suppose to discourage me but it did not. And seeing that the road is not sweet, then I knew am to be here. A lot of us give up on filmmaking when this things happen, but me that was when I made up my mind to go further.

What are the challenges in the industry?

In most cases, the environment we find ourselves. The first challenge that any filmmaker go through in Bayelsa, is the fact that people believe that no good film can come out of the state. So people will not give you money to do something that they ‘assume’ it will not sell.

And I also believe, that happens because most filmmakers feels it’s their right for someone to give them money and not expect it back after the film is done. So those who are capable of investing into filmmaking look at it as an unprofitable business. So, money or funding becomes another challenge in film industry in Bayelsa State.

So one personal challenge I have faced in my time in filmmaking is the fact that we want to make people believe that filmmaking is a good business, and to do so, we have to work with our money first and let the people in that place know that this is a good business.

What genres of films do you make?

I have done drama and historical drama feature film (crime) documentary, short film.

Share your experiences on the number of movies you have produced and directed.

I have produced and directed 2 movies.

I can say on my personal production I don’t have too much challenge even though it’s a production and we must go through challenges. This is because I know the money is not there so I do a strategic planning and if I have to use anything from anyone and I don’t have money I will let you know and agree on it before shooting, I don’t like things surprises especially while on set, it’s very frustrating.

One of the challenges you face as a director, is when your producer will not open up to you and tell you what he or she is lacking on till you get to the set. And they will want you to do it without what you ask for, even when it’s not manageable.

The best way a producer and director can work successfully to achieve a set goal is when both of them arrive at same creative image.

Your last movie, High Eleven tell, is crime fiction movie, what was your expectations and did you meet your expectations?

My expectations seeing the script was very high, and I was excited to work on that type of script, but when we got to set for production, it was different. I can say I didn’t meet up with what I was seeing because a lot has to go down for us to get that, it’s was a very challenging moment, but we thank God, it’s out.
