Rivers Deputy Governor Prof. Ngozi Odu Receives UN Global Icon Award, Reaffirms Commitment To SDGs
Rivers State Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, has reiterated that the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara is placing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the forefront of the state’s development agenda.
Speaking on Monday at Government House, Prof. Odu highlighted how key ministries—including Health, Education, Agriculture, and Women Affairs—are strategically aligned to advance these global targets, with a particular focus on improving the lives of the state’s most vulnerable populations.
The event also marked a historic milestone as Prof. Odu was honored with the United Nations Global Icon of Peace and Integrity Award, becoming the first Nigerian and only the second African woman to receive this prestigious recognition.
Receiving the award from the International Face of Peace and Integrity Advocates, the Deputy Governor described the accolade as a catalyst for continued action.
“This recognition is far more than just an accolade; it is a powerful reminder of my heightened responsibility to enhance my efforts in service to humanity,” she said.
“It challenges me to take decisive action and to amplify the initiatives that have brought about this recognition.”
Prof. Odu also underscored that hosting the ceremony in Port Harcourt sends a strong signal that Rivers State remains peaceful, stable, and attractive for investment. She affirmed that dialogue and negotiation would continue to guide the administration’s approach to peaceful coexistence.
Dr. Chinaza Jennifer Ugboaja, Global Director of the organization, praised Prof. Odu as a trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to integrity continues to inspire the next generation of Nigerian leaders.
