Take Precautionary Measures Against Fire Outbreaks, Fire Service Boss Warns
Residents of Bayelsa state have been charged to take precautionary measures against fire outbreaks as the harmattan season begins.
State Commander Federal Fire Service, Mr Regale Felaye gave the charge while speaking to newsmen in Yenagoa the state capital on the activities of the fire service and how to control fire outbreaks.
He appealed to residents to avoid indiscriminate bush burning during the harmattan as air aids the free flow of fire during this season.
Mr Felaye also mentioned some safety measures to take in order to avoid fire outbreaks.
“The harmattan comes with a lot of fire outbreaks, because this is when the farming starts and some persons would like to burn refuse in their neighborhood, through that burning, the hot gases would fly, there should be a control, you can stay there and monitor the burning”
He also explained measures to curtail various fire outbreaks saying it if a house is burning, water can be used however not in all cases.
“If it is petroleum fire, you should not use water to control it, the fuel is more tense than water, the best method to use is to blanket the fire, you can use sand too”
Also speaking on some of the challenges faced by the fire corporation, State Director, Federal Fire Service, Mr Simon Ayakpo noted that bad roads, traffic, wrong electrical connections are some of the obstacles that hinder them from discharging their duties.
He urged residents to always place a call across to fire fighters immediately they notice any fire incident.
