Tales of A Keke Passenger from Opolo to Ekeki – Episode 2 | Only Passenger

Read episode 2 of the online series Tales of A Keke Passenger from Opolo to Ekeki titled Only Passenger written by Victor Oroyi.  Have a good read.

It’s mid-morning hours, all 9 – 5 workers, are already settled in their workplace. So, the route is scanty this Monday morning as I boarded the sixth-on-coming keke. I have allowed, five of them passed though, I am between hasty and calm, a morning of mixed feeling not clearly defined.

How much? I ask before taking my seat at the passenger’s seat.  In this season, nobody is sure of anything especially, it is a week.

He looks at me with the corner of his eyes and reply, na N150.

I enter, and sits down, taking the rear end of the passenger’s seat to make space for other prospective passengers along the route. But none came until he rides to Erepa Junction to find one drunkard, heading pass Ekeki. Funny, I though in my mind, in this presence economy, do people still get drunk in the early hours of the morning, I quickly brought myself to reality saying this is not your business.

PREVIOUSLY ON TALES OF A KEKE PASSENGER FROM OPOLO TO EKEKI

The prospective passenger brings out two N50 notes and shows to the driver, abeg help me, I dey go Amarata.

Earlier, two ladies tickles my fantasy, as their keke speed pass us along between the Custom and PDP junction using their phones. One seated at the back is watching a skit, I guess, smiling ravishingly not minding what is happening. As I wondered, how she manage to hear what is been said, my eyes picked the lady in the front seat with the driver, also strolling her phone with a frowned face. This, lady is taking a risk, if this phone falls off when the rider applies his brake suddenly, what happens? I thought within myself.

Hmm… just than, we met this first prospective passenger from Opolo, who is a drunkard during the ride. Despite his plea, the rider looks at him and drives off without a word to him.

I pondered, Oga, you don drive reach here with only one passenger from Opolo, you still wan take only this passenger reach Ekeki? So, you no fit help your fellow man. Again, I came to reality, this is not your business. I am worried as the only passenger in this ride, with the high cost of fuel, so I thought, he would pick this passenger and moreover, where am getting a gist for today’s tales of a keke passenger from Opolo to Ekeki series.

So, I continued as the only passenger until Nikton Junction, where he picks two undecided passengers – a male and female. The lady brings out her and withdraws it immediately, but the rider made a stop in front them. He has had several near-misses of passengers since the last one. Whenever, he tries to get a passenger, another keke rider would have picked the passenger and he drove off. This, one, I no go miss whether she one enter or not, I quess, he said to himself before stopping.

Along… the man said giving the woman the gesture to enter the keke with his hand, the rider nods his head to tell them to enter. The lady enters first and the man follows.

Wow, finally, he has three passengers at the back, as his eyes were on the road to get a fourth one to sit with him at the front seat. He had a miss at the Okaka junction as he slows down, another one speeds up and overtakes him to pick the passenger.

Within a short ride, Kilmajaro… with his deep baritone voice the man taps the rider’s shoulders prompting him to stop. The rider stops at the branded signpost of the popular fast-food shot opposite the central park. He brings out a N500 note to pay for the fare, for two, he said stretching it out to the ride.

So, why that display of arrogance, when you are not paying, madam, I said in my thought looking at the lady who walks away as the man waits for his change. I guess that gives the reason for that subtle order to enter this particular keke by the man.

This rider will continue without any passenger, after all three messengers alight. How will he make up for the cost of the fuel? Just my thought this morning.
