Nehemiah led the third return of exiled Jews back to the land of Israel. As cupbearer to the king of Persia, he held an important administrative post in the government. When he received word that the people who had already returned to Jerusalem were in distress, he was greatly disturbed. But, he believed God’s promise that when his people repented and returned to him, he would restore their land.
Based on God’s Word, Nehemiah began a program of what we today could call “community development” among God’s people. With the blessing and help of a pagan king, Nehemiah returned home to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, the city of God. This demonstrates that even the secular world is subject to God when his people operate according to His kingdom promises and authority. Nehemiah also provides a study in great leadership. In a mere fifty-two days, Nehemiah led the people, amid opposition, to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls.
He also called for the development of solid families, for the temple to be the center of life, for the people to live under the covenant promises of God, and for them to become a righteous and just community.
