BYSACA Marks World AIDS Day With Road Walk, Candle Light Session in Yenagoa

The Bayelsa state Agency For the Control of HIV and AIDS (BYSACA) have joined rest of the world to celebrate this year’s World AIDS Day with a call on everyone to come together to make life worth living for people living with HIV.

The permanent secretary Ministry of Health, Dr. (Mrs) O.A. Azebi who made the call during the celebration at Peace Park opposite Government House in Yenagoa said, it is time again to remember those of our family members, friends and colleagues who died due to HIV infection.

According to her, the event which holds every December first across the globe is designed to show commitment to support the fight against AIDS and ensure the people living with the disease are taken care of as well as rekindle their hope with proven actions needed to address inequalities and help to end AIDS.

She stressed that, this can be done through increased availability of the resources to end the scourge, such as persons who do not discriminate against people living with HIV, available resources and equipment to carryout regular investigations to favour better living, medications to sustain treatment and neccessay moral support.

Speaking on the theme; EQUALIZE TO END AIDS : EQUAL ACCESS TO TREATMENT AND PREVENTION SERVICES, Dr. Azebi who also double as the Acting Director General of BYSACA, explained that, the global AIDS strategy, ( END inequalities end AIDS ) is aimed to reduce the prevailing inequalities that drive the AIDS epidemic and priotize people who are not yet accessing life-saving HIV services.

Also, in their separate remarks, Special Adviser to the Governor on Health Matters, Dr Ayakeme Tonkiri and the Technical Adviser on public Health, Bishop Duotimi Egbegi used the opportunity to call on sundry to be part of the movement and joined in the global alliance to end AIDS in the nearest future.

The duo assured that the Governor Douye Diri led prosperity government is committed to work collectively with the Agency and other key players in the sector to address the inequalities which are holding back progress in ending AIDS.

Earlier, Director of Public Health, Ministry of Health, Dr. Stow Jones on behalf of Management and staff of BYSACA expressed appreciation to Governor Douye Diri and his Deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakp for their support in making this year’s World AIDS Day a huge success.

Others are the Chairman House of Assembly House Committee on Health, Dr. Oyinke Godbless, Commissioner of Health, Dr Pabara Igwele, SA health, Dr. Ayakeme Tonkiri, all line ministries , implementing partners and other stakeholders for their immense support in the fight against HIV & AIDS in Bayelsa state.

Special Road Walk and drama presentation climaxed the event.
