The Cross River State government has began to impound commercial vehicles not wearing the state colours and not having a bold security inscription number.
Commissioner for Transport, Mr Ukwa Edet disclosed this to newsmen in Calabar saying the decision became necessary due to the increase in the security challenges in the state.
Earlier, in year 2018, the Security Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade had given a directive that all commercial vehicles must be painted in blue and white and commercial vehicles operators were also mandated to get a security number that should be boldly inscribed on their vehicles.
Mr Edet explained that several meetings were held with commercial transport operators on the issue and the deadline was shifted several times to show considerations as thy claimed to be going through difficult times.
However, he said the penalty for disobeying the order is impoundment of the vehicle after which the owner would pay the expenses of the security operatives that made the arrest.
In his reaction, Chairman, Tricycle Association of Nigeria, Cross Rivers State chapter, Mr Ekpeyong Ewa admitted that the state government had given the transporters over three years to comply adding that some obeyed the directive but many refused.
