Douye Diri: The People’s Choice! By Inetsol Eyal Oru
Four years after the emergence of Senator Douye Diri as Governor of Bayelsa State in 2020, he has consolidated on the achievements of his predecessor and has set a pace that has earned him the title – the People’s Governor. This was made possible by his dedication to ensuring that nothing hinders the growth and development of the State through his meticulous and intentional approach to maintaining peace and security in Bayelsa State.
Another remarkable achievement by the Governor, Senator Douye Diri, is his focus on infrastructural development through the approval and commencement of major Senatorial roads like the Yenagoa-Oporoma-Ukubie road, the 21 km first phase of the Nembe-Brass project awarded to SETRACO, which will potentially open up not just the aforementioned places to urbanization, but the entire Bayelsa State to investment opportunities that will further diversify the economy.
These and many more were noticed by the former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who while inaugurating the 10.75km second phase of the Yenagoa- Oporoma- Ukubie road excitedly endorsed Senator Douye Diri for a second term, stating that “a winning horse should be kept in the race”.
The well established fact that Senator Douye Diri is the people’s choice was again confidently demonstrated by the over 175,000 votes that he polled in the last elections, winning at least six LGA’s with very high margins including Southern Ijaw Local Government which the main opposition supposedly thought was one of their strongholds.
The victory in Southern Ijaw LGA has reinforced the fact that Diri’s victory was a state wide victory.
This is equally demonstrated with the post-victory endorsement by former President Goodluck Jonathan who congratulated the Governor on his re-election and advised that the Governor be given all the support he needs to pilot the affairs of the State.
Also, the Managing Director/CEO of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Sam Ogbuku, who was the DG of the APC Gubernatorial Campaign Council in Bayelsa State, has embraced the victory of Governor Diri and has sent words of congratulations to him. This has sent jitters to the fold of opposition and Chief Timipre Sylva, who is likely to approach the Tribunal to challenge the victory.
While the Governor continues to enjoy the people’s goodwill and general celebratory remarks over his victory, he has continued to reiterate that Bayelsa belongs to everyone and that the gratitude showed by Bayelsans by massively voting for him will further strengthen his commitment to putting Bayelsa first.
