NAPTIP Seeks Special Court for Human Trafficking Cases in Bayelsa
By Ebis Freeman, YENAGOA, — The Bayelsa State Command of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has appealed for the establishment of a specialized court to handle human trafficking cases in the state, as part of efforts to strengthen the fight against the crime and ensure speedy justice for victims.
The appeal was made during a courtesy visit by the Bayelsa State Commander of NAPTIP, Commander Ngozi Opara to the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Hon. Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye, on June 1, 2026.
The visit formed part of the Commander’s familiarization tour following her assumption of office.
Speaking during the meeting, the NAPTIP Commander highlighted the agency’s mandate and ongoing efforts aimed at eradicating human trafficking and violence against persons across Nigeria. She emphasized the need for a dedicated court to expedite the hearing of trafficking-related cases, noting that prolonged delays often discourage victims, who serve as key witnesses in many prosecutions.
According to her, when cases linger in court for extended periods, victims may lose interest in pursuing justice, thereby weakening prosecution efforts and reducing the chances of securing convictions against offenders.
The Commander stressed that a specialized court would help fast-track trials, protect victims’ interests, and enhance the overall effectiveness of anti-human trafficking interventions in Bayelsa State.
Responding, the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, Hon. Justice Matilda Abrakasa Ayemieye, expressed appreciation to the NAPTIP delegation for the visit and commended the agency’s commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable persons.
Justice Ayenieye assured the delegation that the judiciary would carefully consider the request for a specialized court and continue to support initiatives aimed at advancing the agency’s mandate within the state.
She reiterated the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring access to justice and strengthening institutional collaboration in the fight against human trafficking and related offences.
The visit also featured the presentation of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials to the Chief Judge. In a symbolic gesture underscoring the agency’s zero-tolerance stance against human trafficking, members of the delegation issued the traditional “Red Card to Human Traffickers” campaign materials.
The engagement is expected to further strengthen cooperation between NAPTIP and the Bayelsa State Judiciary in addressing human trafficking and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice while victims receive the protection and support they deserve.
The courtesy visit concluded with photographs and exchanges aimed at reinforcing the partnership between both institutions in promoting justice and safeguarding human rights in Bayelsa State.
