PDP BoT Rejects Appeal Court Judgment, Moves to Reconcile Party Leaders
ABUJA, Nigeria — The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria which invalidated the party’s November 2025 National Convention, while initiating moves to reconcile aggrieved stakeholders and restore stability within the opposition party.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its Expanded Emergency Meeting held between March 10 and 11, 2026, the BoT Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, said the board disagreed with the ruling delivered by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, Ibadan Division, which pronounced the convention that produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee invalid.
Wabara stated that the board was awaiting legal advice from the party’s lawyers to determine the appropriate next step regarding the judgment.
The BoT expressed concern over the persistent leadership disputes within the party, describing the internal wranglings and litigations as avoidable crises capable of undermining the unity and smooth operation of the PDP as Nigeria’s major opposition party.
Despite its disagreement with the court ruling, the board acknowledged the opportunity provided by the judgment for reconciliation and resolved to explore that window in order to rebuild cohesion among party leaders and members.
“The Board is conscious of the interest and aspiration of our members who are desirous of contesting various positions in the 2027 general elections,” the communiqué noted, stressing the need to stabilise the party in preparation for the polls.
As part of efforts to resolve the crisis, the BoT announced the constitution of a special committee mandated to engage the party’s legal teams and other stakeholders with the aim of fostering reconciliation and ending the lingering disputes.
The board also said it had taken note of what it described as increasing support from Nigerians, citing reports of a surge in the ongoing nationwide e-registration of members, with millions reportedly registering daily across the country.
According to the BoT, the development demonstrates the PDP’s continued relevance and popularity as the preferred political platform for many Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Calling for unity, the board urged leaders and members of the party to set aside personal interests and work together for the collective good of the party and the country.
The BoT also commended the efforts of Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State, and Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State, for what it described as their commitment to the stability of the party and the wellbeing of Nigerians.
In another key decision, the board, acting pursuant to Section 32 of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), unanimously approved the appointment of Muazu Babangida Aliyu as the Secretary of the Board of Trustees.
The BoT further urged Nigerians not to lose hope, assuring that the PDP was working towards repositioning itself to “salvage the nation from the stranglehold” of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
