
Professor Uduma Appointed as New Vice-Chancellor of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has officially announced the appointment of Professor Uduma O. Uduma as its new Vice-Chancellor, following the approval of the University’s Governing Council. His appointment will take effect from February 11, 2026, marking the end of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by His Excellency, Mallam Isa Yuguda, CON, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. The appointment followed the recommendations of the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board.
Professor Uduma O. Uduma, a distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Logic and a Barrister-at-Law, brings with him decades of experience in academia and administration. Born on January 30, 1966, he earned his first degree from the University of Calabar, where he graduated as the best student in his faculty, before obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Philosophy from the University of Lagos. In 2007, he was called to the Nigerian Bar, further expanding his intellectual and professional depth.
Throughout his career, Professor Uduma has served in several key positions within the university system, including Head of Department, Director of General Studies, Director of Academic Planning, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the National Open University of Nigeria.
As Study Centre Director in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, he significantly increased student enrollment from 496 to over 2,000, a testament to his visionary leadership and dedication to academic excellence. His scholarly contributions are widely recognized, with a strong research presence on Google Scholar and other academic platforms.
The National Open University of Nigeria expressed confidence in Professor Uduma’s capacity to lead the institution into a new era of innovation, inclusivity, and academic growth.
“The University looks forward to Professor Uduma’s leadership and vision as he assumes office on 11th February, 2026,” the statement read. “We are confident that his expertise and experience will drive NOUN’s continued growth and success.”
With his appointment, Professor Uduma O. Uduma becomes the next Vice-Chancellor of one of Nigeria’s foremost open and distance learning institutions — a position that places him at the helm of advancing accessible higher education for millions of learners across the country.
