Thabo Mbeki, Former President of South Africa Still Alive, Says Foundation
Thabo Mbeki, the former president of South Africa, is still alive and well, says his foundation in a new release.
‘The foundation responded to rumors that the former president had passed away that were going around on social media on Wednesday.
“We categorically deny these reports and wish to assure the public that President Mbeki is in good health,” the foundation said in a statement.
“We urge caution and responsible engagement with online information, particularly during a time when misinformation can spread rapidly.”
This is not the first fake news article that has targeted Mr. Mbeki. Social media reports during the Covid pandemic in 2021 falsely stated that the former leader had passed away.
Nelson Mandela, the nation’s first black president, was succeeded by Mr. Mbeki. From 1999 until 2008, he presided as South Africa’s second democratically elected president. (BBC)
