Farming Season: University of Abuja Commences Community Development Service Outreach

The Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Abuja, commences its community development service outreach to immediate communities for this year’s farming season.

This project was led by a group of 500 level students on 9th March 2024 and 4th April 2024 to Gwako, Iddo Sarki, Anagada and Dukpa, aimed at understanding the major challenges faced by the farmers in the communities and providing solutions to them.

The supervisor in charge of the project, Prof. E.E. Idu, said, “This innovative service has been on since the last 10 years as part of our community development service in the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Abuja. In carrying out the project, we educated the communities on how to make farm yard compost to reduce the cost of production and develop new techniques of crop rotation to increase the fertility and productivity of their soil for optimum production, among other activities.”

The communities expressed their gratitude to the University through their community chiefs, who on their behalf received the donation of a new hybrid maize seed to the community farmers to enhance their productivity and profitability if used with good agronomic practice.
