Rhodes-Vivour Faces Fresh Yoruba Language Questions Ahead of Lagos Governorship Race
By Dim Oba, LAGOS –Â African Democratic Congress (ADC) Lagos governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has again attracted attention on social media following an exchange with a member of the public over the promotion of Yoruba language and culture in Lagos State.
The exchange began when the resident asked Rhodes-Vivour in Yoruba what he would do to promote the language if elected governor of the state.
The interaction has since generated reactions online, with discussions centring on the place of Yoruba language, culture and identity in Lagos politics.
Rhodes-Vivour’s proficiency in Yoruba has been a subject of public debate since the 2023 Lagos governorship election, when his language ability became one of the issues raised by some critics and political observers.
For some of his critics, fluency in Yoruba is an important quality for anyone seeking to govern Lagos, given the state’s historical and cultural ties to the Yoruba people. Others, however, argue that competence, policy direction and the ability to govern a diverse population should be the primary considerations in choosing a governor.
The latest exchange has therefore reopened an old debate as the 2027 governorship contest gradually takes shape.
Beyond the language question, the development has also drawn attention to the wider expectations of Lagos voters, particularly young people, who are increasingly demanding clearer positions from political candidates on employment, education, housing, transportation, technology, security and economic opportunities.
As political activities intensify ahead of the election, candidates are expected to face increasing scrutiny not only over their policy proposals but also over their understanding of Lagos’ diverse cultural identities and the issues affecting residents across the state.
The renewed conversation over Yoruba language underscores the extent to which cultural identity continues to intersect with politics in Lagos, one of Nigeria’s most diverse and politically influential states.
