Rivers, FCT Get New Federal Universities, Senate Passes Bill
The Nigerian Senate has passed two bills for the establishment of two Federal universities in the country which would be located in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja and Rivers State.
They are FCT University of Science and Technology, Abaji and Federal University of Environmental Technology, Koroma, Ogoni in Tai local government area of Rivers State.
The bill was passed after considerations of two reports presented by the Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND.
Vice Chairman of the committee, Senator Sandy Onu in a presentation on behalf of the Chairman Senator Ahmed Baba Kaita said the bill establishing the FCT University of Science and Technology, Abaji would provide the needed framework to close the gap in science and technology.
He noted that the bill establishing the Federal University of Environmental Technology would provide the academic and professional programs leading to the awards of first degrees, post graduate degrees and diplomas with special emphasis on environmental technology and research.
These bills to establish the two Federal universities were passed by the chamber after considerations by the Committee.
