Senator Douye Diri Reassures Workers of Their Welfare to Increase Productivity

The Bayelsa State governor, Senator Douye Diri reassures workers in the state that his administration would prioritize their welfare to increase productivity.

The governor came out with this as part of activities to mark the Workers Day celebration held in Yenagoa the Bayelsa State capital.

Governor Douye Diri also granted the requests of the workers which includes implementation of the annual step increment, release of funds for conduct of the 2022 promotion exercise for both the state and local government levels.

He equally granted approval for the financial implementation of 2021 promotion exercise for the workers and directed the relevant government officials to negotiate with the Labour union and make recommendations.

On payment of minimum wage to workers in tertiary institutions in the state, the governor explained that the committee set up under the leadership of the deputy governor would soon submit their recommendations for implementation.

The governor noted that this month, a sizeable amount would be made available for pensioners to clear all the backlogs.

” For this month, am not unaware of the long queue of pensioners, as you are aware, we are having a backlog of payment of gratuities for our pensioners. Therefore for the month of February, we have looked at and come up with an addition, monthly we are doing two hundred million but this month, we shall add two hundred million as an addition so four hundred million would be made available for the payment of pensioners and gratuities”

Governor Diri directed the Commissioner for Education, Mr Gentle Emelah to come up with recommendations for the monthly running cost for government technical colleges for immediate implementation.

The same directive was given to officials of the Ministry of Health for the payment of core duty allowances and specialist nurses as approved in 2014 extant rules.

” Funding and provision of teaching aids for technical schools. I hereby direct the Commissioner for Education to bring up recommendations on the monthly running cost of the schools for immediate implementation”

Responding, the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress TUC led by Comrade John Ndiomu, NLC Chairman expressed appreciation to Governor Douye Diri for having a workers friendly disposition.

The NLC and TUC thanked the governor for the prompt payment of salaries and gratuities, infrastructural development and other projects as well as the release of funds to support the school teachers in local government councils.

” Our demands, your excellency Sir, annual salary increment, another one is 2021 promotion exercise, pension and gratuities, minimum wage arrears, non payment of promotion arrears, proper funding for teaching aids, infrastructure for technical schools, training and retraining of workers in the civil service” he added.

The Labour unions called on the governor to continue to do more for workers welfare in the state.
